For Wendi LeBrett, MD, a third-year fellow at the University of California, Los Angeles, her work with patients with irritable bowel syndrome made her realize the benefits of exercise in this population. Her research delves into exercise tracking with readily available smart wristbands, and she told Gastroenterology & Endoscopy News that she hopes this research will translate into giving patients more control over their IBS.
Previous research showing links between step count and sleep and IBS activity were used with research-grade collection methods, she said. But “patients are really interested in using their own wearable devices,” she said, “and using that as a way to track their own progress, and that’s something they can share with their physicians.”
Dr. LeBrett talked about her research, as well as her goals and challenges, for the series GI Fellows Chat. Check out more interviews in our Fellows Corner.
