In an interview with Gastroenterology & Endoscopy News, Madhav Desai, MD, MPH, an advanced endoscopist in the Center for Interventional Gastroenterology, McGovern Medical School at UTHealth, in Houston, discusses highlights of the updated American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy guideline on the diagnosis and management of gastroesophageal reflux disease (Gastrointest Endosc 2025;101[2]:267-284).

In this second part of the discussion, Dr. Desai identifies key points of debate among the guideline authors, remaining gaps in evidence, and take-home points for practicing gastroenterologists.

“Discuss with patients the risks and benefits of every approach, as we have cited in the guideline that lifestyle changes and modification is very important,” he explained. “This includes weight loss, dietary modification, and lifestyle changes. This often gets ignored.”
