Radiofrequency ablation reduced stent dysfunction and was associated with fewer adverse events in patients who underwent endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography, according to the results of a study that Hassan Siddiki, MD, presented at DDW 2025, in San Diego.

“If we can make these [stents] stay in for longer, we can avoid these patients coming back to use for repeated stent changes,” Dr. Siddiki, a gastroenterologist at Cleveland Clinic, in Ohio, told Gastroenterology & Endoscopy News. He added that performing RFA did not significantly increase procedure time.

Additional randomized controlled trials will help determine if all patients with a malignant stricture should undergo ablative therapy during stent placement, Dr. Siddiki said.
