Endoscopic ultrasound has played an increasingly expanding role in gastrointestinal diagnosis and treatment over the past several years, and recently, Christopher DiMaio, MD, sat down with GEN to discuss how this modality is revolutionizing hepatology.

Predicting that EUS “will have a major impact on the management of patients with a variety of liver diseases,” Dr. DiMaio discussed several applications, including less invasive liver biopsies, elastography and vascular interventions, such as treatment of varices and portal pressure gradient measurements.

“The data that’s out there shows that this is safe, highly effective and is really becoming more widely available throughout the country,” added Dr. DiMaio, the regional director of endoscopy at Northwell Health, in Greenlawn, N.Y. “Overall, endohepatology looks like it’s here to stay.”
