Blue Dye for Colonoscopy Increases Neoplasia Detection in Trial

Methylene blue dye can significantly increase the detection of adenomas during surveillance colonoscopy, according to a multicenter, double-blind phase 3 trial.

Relative to placebo, the highest tested dose of the dye was associated with an absolute 8.5% increase (56.3% vs. 47.8%) in the adenoma detection rate (ADR)—a difference that could be clinically meaningful, said Alessandro Repici, MD, the director of digestive endoscopy at Humanitas School of Medicine, in Milan.
