Sleeve gastrectomy now accounts for nearly half of all bariatric surgeries performed in the United States each year, rising roughly fivefold between 2010 and 2013, new research shows.
In 2010, sleeve gastrectomy accounted for 9.3% of bariatric surgeries, far behind gastric bypass (58.4%) and gastric banding (28.8%). By 2013, the numbers had shifted dramatically, with gastrectomy accounting for 49% of bariatric procedures, followed by gastric bypass (43.8%) and gastric banding (6%).
