Bidirectional endoscopy should be performed to screen for a gastrointestinal cause of iron deficiency anemia (IDA) in most asymptomatic patients, according to a new clinical guideline from the American Gastroenterological Association on the management of the condition.
Other key changes from prior guidance include a higher ferritin threshold for diagnosing IDA, and a recommendation against routine biopsies for patients with Helicobacter pylori, celiac disease and autoimmune gastritis.
