Manometry Study Shakes Up Understanding Of Colorectal Function

Findings could lead to better care of dysmotility

Banff, Alberta—Simultaneous pressure waves are the most common propulsive motor activity of the human colon, and are associated with relaxation of the internal anal sphincter and expulsion of gas and other contents of the rectum, new research shows.

The findings, which clash with previous reports that simultaneous pressure waves are artifacts or inhibit colonic transit, could lead to improvements in the management of people with chronic dysmotility disorders, experts said.

“Chronic
