Gut Microbes Linked to NAFLD Cirrhosis

A study of people with and without non-alcoholic fatty liver disease has identified a panel of 27 types of bacteria that can detect NAFLD cirrhosis. The research, published in Nature Communications (2019;10[1]:1406), provides support for the use of a fecal microbiome–derive d signature to identify the liver condition.

“I am optimistic that a stool-based diagnostic will be utilized in the future over the next five to 10 years,” said Rohit Loomba, MD, of the NAFLD Research Center
