Surveillance colonoscopy within 10 years may be unnecessary for people found to have low-risk adenomas on index colonoscopy, according to a study of 17,592 veterans that found colorectal cancer death rates were similar to controls with no adenomas.
The study, which also took into the account the impact of subsequent colonoscopy, adds to a growing body of evidence suggesting that low-risk adenomas pose little to no risk for subsequent colorectal cancer, said lead researcher Thomas Imperiale, MD,
