An implantable automated pump that moves fluid from the abdominal cavity to the bladder appears to be a safe and effective alternative to conventional treatment for ascites, researchers have found.
In the first randomized controlled trial of the device, called Alfapump (Sequana Medical AG), researchers found that the pump reduced the need for large-volume paracentesis (LVP) and improved quality of life (QOL) in cirrhotic patients with refractory ascites.
