PET Scans Help Tailor Chemo for Esophageal Cancer

San Francisco—Chemoradiation before surgery has been shown to improve survival in patients with advanced cancers of the upper gastrointestinal tract over surgery alone, but the optimal chemotherapy for this population is unknown.

Positron emission tomographic (PET) scans can improve presurgery treatment of patients with esophageal and gastroesophageal junction (GEJ) cancers, according to initial results from the Cancer and Leukemia Group B (CALGB) 80803 trial.
