Endoscopic Spray Halts GI Bleeding

A spray that controls upper gastrointestinal bleeding is also effective at stanching blood loss from malignancies in the lower GI tract, according to a pilot study.

The study is evaluating Hemospray (Cook Medical), which is approved for the control of upper GI bleeding in several countries, but not in the United States. An inorganic powder delivered via an endoscope, Hemospray adheres to the bleeding site, absorbing water and producing a mechanical tamponade of the actively bleeding lesion.
