A veritable army of Federal, academic and private forces came out in support of microbiome research late last week, announcing the launch of the National Microbiome Initiative (NMI). The White House and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation led the way in funding, dedicating $121 and $100 million, respectively, for microbiome science during 2016/2017.
