Trial Suggests Approach for Halting Recurrent Peritonitis in Cirrhotic Patients

Recurrence of spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP) is common in patients with decompensated cirrhosis despite the use of secondary prophylaxis protocols, according to a new study.

The investigation also found that biweekly administration of granulocyte macrophage-colony stimulating factor (GM-CSF) in combination with norfloxacin was more effective at preventing recurrence than daily therapy with norfloxacin alone, although not to a statistically significant extent.
