Breathing While Black: Exhausted and Invigorated as an African American Gastroenterologist

How complicated to feel both exhausted and invigorated in the same breath. Yet many of us now find ourselves experiencing that same set of emotions.
Being deprived of breath is a devastating theme of the times. Be it from police brutality or the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes COVID-19, it comes down to one of the three primal components of life support: breathing.

COVID-19, in its most severe cases, can literally take one’s breath away—as it has done for more
