In this installment of GI Fellows Chat, Shaman Dalal, MD, talks with Gastroenterology & Endoscopy News about his six years as a fellow at MetroHealth System, in Cleveland. Dr. Dalal, now an assistant professor of medicine at Jefferson Health, in Philadelphia, said he initially wanted to be a cardiologist, but a gastroenterology rotation led him to realize his heart was in GI.
“I love the procedural aspect of it,” Dr. Dalal said, but he acknowledged that fellowship has its challenges, the biggest for him being his decision about what to do when fellowship ended.
“You don’t know exactly what you’re going to face and what kind of career pathway you want to take,” he said, adding that he addressed this challenge by talking with other professionals and going on interviews in different pathways to discover what excited him most.
