Consumption of foods rich in long-chain omega-3 fatty acids and dark meat fish appears to prolong disease-free survival among people with colorectal cancer, researchers have found.
The effect was greatest among patients whose tumors had moderate to high expression of the cyclooxygenase-2 enzyme. For this group, eating a diet heavy in omega-3 fatty acids was linked to a 68% reduction in risk for recurrence of cancer, according to the researchers (P=0.01).
