Statins May Cut Risk for Cirrhosis Death

The data showing that statins protect against advancing cirrhosis are encouraging enough to warrant a placebo-controlled trial of the treatment, according to researchers who have been studying the association.

The most recent study, like the others before it, was retrospective, but the cohort analysis associated statins with highly significant reductions in the risk for progressing from compensated to decompensated cirrhosis and a 50% reduction in death from either condition.
