The American College of Gastroenterology recently published an updated clinical practice guideline on focal liver lesions, and lead author Carrie Frenette, MD, sat down with GEN to discuss key changes since the last ACG guideline in this area was published in 2017.

Dr. Frenette, the executive director of global medical affairs, liver diseases, at Gilead Sciences, said she and her co-authors sought to create a practical and straightforward guide for clinicians. “When you’re sitting in clinic, … you can literally just have this flowchart on your Post-it board and be able to reference quickly what is the recommended management,” she added.

Key changes to the guideline include new recommendations on when to refer patients to a specialist and how to approach adenomas, Dr. Frenette said, emphasizing the importance of subtyping to guide treatment decisions.

‘These guidelines are meant to really be very practical and very easy to use in clinic,” she said. “That’s the goal, to make the life of the gastroenterologist and their APPs [advanced practice providers] better and easier.”
