Studies Show Paths to Improved Care in Barrett’s Esophagus

Washington—In two independent studies relevant to quality assurance in the management of Barrett’s esophagus, one found that nearly one-third of patients in the United States may be undergoing follow-up endoscopic surveillance too often, while the other documented a steep increase in complications when six or more specimens are taken during endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR).

The data showing overly frequent BE surveillance were drawn from the GI Quality Improvement Consortium
