Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Directed at Helplessness Relieves Reflux Symptoms

Las Vegas—For at least some patients with upper gastrointestinal symptoms, a few sessions of cognitive behavioral therapy can bring substantial symptom relief, according to a single-center study that recruited patients with esophageal complaints.

“We piloted a psychogastroenterology intervention to reduce symptoms by targeting hypervigilance and symptom anxiety,” explained Madison Simons, PsyD, a clinician and researcher at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine,
