ADVANCES IN ERCP
This section contains a collection of articles on endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography selected by Jerome H. Siegel, MD. Dr. Siegel, who is a member of Gastroenterology & Endoscopy News’ Medical Advisory Board, provides a commentary on each of the articles in this section. Dr. Siegel is an attending physician in gastroenterology at Beth Israel Medical Center and is clinical professor of medicine at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, both in New York City.
Team Develops, Evaluates Low-Cost Simulator for ERCP Training
ISSUE: MAY, 2009
A California team is examining the feasibility of a low-cost mechanical endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) simulator, most recently evaluating the performance outcomes associated with simulation training of endoscopists without prior ERCP experience. read more
Researchers Establish Predictors of Mortality in Acute Pancreatitis
ISSUE: NOVEMBER, 2008
Investigators have recently identified a clinical scoring system for the prediction of in-hospital mortality in patients with acute pancreatitis. read more
Is a Radiologist’s Report Really Necessary in ERCP?
Two Studies Call the Usefulness of This Standard Into Question
ISSUE: JULY, 2008
Two studies have confirmed what most gastroenterologists have known for years—that having a radiologist review endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) films does little or nothing to improve the accuracy of the diagnosis or the course of therapy. read more
Covered Metal Stents Do Not Yet Have Endoscopists Fully Covered In Malignant Biliary Obstruction
ISSUE: MAY, 2008
Covered self-expanding metal stents do not appear to be distinguishing themselves from their uncovered counterparts in the palliation of malignant distal biliary obstruction. read more
3 Fr or 5 Fr? Which Reduces Severity of Post-ERCP Pancreatitis in High-Risk Patients?
ISSUE: NOVEMBER, 2007
One of the fathers of the technique of using a stent to reduce the incidence of pancreatitis after endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) has conducted a randomized trial to determine whether the stent that bears his name—the short 5 Fr Geenen stent—is better or worse than a newer version of the stent, the 3 Fr pigtail stent. The results indicate both are equally effective. read more
Will That Be Plastic or Metal—and Would You Like PDT on the Side?
ISSUE: OCTOBER, 2007
A study presented at the 2007 Digestive Disease Week meeting made a case for the combination of endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography with plastic stents and photodynamic therapy (PDT) for the palliation of unresectable hilar cholangiocarcinoma. read more
Rapid Endoscopic Secretin Test Shows Promise in Diagnosis of Chronic Pancreatitis
ISSUE: SEPTEMBER, 2007
A team of researchers may have revitalized the prospects of a rapid intraductal, endoscopic secretin stimulation test for diagnosing chronic pancreatitis because of robust results they obtained in a study, which was presented at the 2007 Digestive Disease Week meeting. read more
Researchers Examine Role of Contrast in Post-ERCP Pancreatitis
ISSUE: JUNE, 2007
Preliminary results from a Canadian randomized study suggest that wire cannulation during ERCP decreases the incidence of pancreatitis compared with standard cannulation guided by dye injection. read more
