The success of colonoscopy as a screening modality for colorectal cancer is highly dependent on the ability to purge the colon of fecal material in order to provide an unobstructed view of the bowel wall. The adoption of more effective methods of bowel cleansing and a greater emphasis on patient compliance with preparation instructions will improve the effectiveness and efficiency of colonoscopy, as well as minimize the risk for procedural complications.
